Our Partner School, West Decatur, is our "In the Spotlight" Ministry this week. The Backpacks of Hope Lenten Food Drive has started, and the students need our help. Please see the list of food below and bring all items to the boxes in the fountain area. Also scroll down and see all the other ways you can help West Decatur like being a reading buddy, mentor, or helping with school events.

Backpacks of Hope Lenten Food Drive

We are asking everyone to be a part of a food drive during Lent to help replenish our stock for the Backpacks of Hope program for West Decatur. We fill 65 backpacks each week, so we need LOTS of the following items:
pudding
apple sauce
fruit snacks
cereal bars
granola bars
16oz cans of pasta
16oz cans of soup

Items can be left in boxes in the fountain area. If you cannot bring items but are interested in sponsoring a child for just $12 a month, look for our sponsor information in the fountain area.

Help West Decatur Students

West Decatur Elementary is quite thankful for the support we receive from CUMC.  Here are a few ways you can help us this year.  Please call (341-0796) or email ( This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it ) Melissa Penley to let her know when you are available and want to help.

1.  Reading Buddy - Some of our students need someone to help them with letters, sounds and reading.  You can choose the age you would rather work with and commit to at least 30 minutes per week to come to West Decatur and work with a child.

 2. Events at West Decatur

Thursday, Nov. 3 - Family Literacy Night/Book Fair 5:30-7:30pm - We need adults to help serve supper (pizza, salad and cookies), and we also need adults to sell books during our book fair.

Monday, Nov. 14, Jan. 23, and Feb. 13 - RIF book Giveaways - 7:30-9:30 am - Every student in our school receives a free book, and we need 3 adults to help hand the books out to the students.

3. Mentoring - Many of our students need a positive adult mentor to meet with them weekly to encourage them, and just spend some time with them, maybe just eating lunch and visiting with them.

4. Wonderful Wildcat Celebration sponsors - We will have four WW celebrations this year to honor children who have good behavior and use the 7 habits daily in leadership roles.  Each celebration costs $75 dollars.  Please decide if you, your Sunday school class, or small group can sponsor one of these.

5.  Backpacks of Hope - CUMC is still sponsoring this ministry at West Decatur, and now other churches are sponsoring all of the other Title I elementary schools in Decatur.  Any monetary donations, food donations, shoppers and baggers are needed.  We pack the bags on WED nights after supper in the Fellowship Hall...see complete details below.

We are continuing our Backpacks of Hope Program to help West Decatur Elementary students. It is a national program through Feeding America that allows us to send child-friendly food home with students in their backpacks on Fridays, so the children will have food to eat over the weekend. Right now, we have 65 students/families who have gone through the FACT referral process and need this program. What makes this program so important is that the students don’t have to wait for their parents to go and get food for them, they can open their backpack and eat when they are hungry on Saturdays and Sundays.

1. Sponsor a child for $15 per month for 12 months. Please make your check to “CUMC Backpacks Food program.”

2. Be a shopper at the Food Bank in Huntsville once a month along with Melissa Penley.
The Food Bank of North Alabama, where we get a large portion of the food, is in Huntsville. It is open Monday-Thursday each week from 9:00 AM - 2:00 PM. The church is billed for each purchase, so there is no need to worry about having to pay when you shop there, and no wait for a reimbursement check from our church. The Huntsville food bank orientation date is July 25 from 10:30 AM-noon. If you are interested in being one of our “Food Bank shoppers,” please contact Melissa Penley at 256-341-0796 or This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. 3. Be a Wednesday night “packer” to fill bags with food for each student.

4. Buy the following foods at the grocery store when you are shopping and put them in the Fellowship Hall box labeled “Backpack Food Program”:
Non-refrigerated juice boxes/pouches, single-serve canned fruit, single-serve applesauce, crackers, single-serve pop top ravioli, chili or franks & beans, single-serve cereals, nutri-grain bars (no peanuts), single-serve teddy grahams or animal crackers, single-serve beef stew or chicken noodle soup, non-refrigerated cheddar cheese/cracker single-serve packs

Thank you for caring for the children of West Decatur Elementary.
