Take me out to the ballgame

Take me out to the ballgame

-Pastor Fred Webster

There is nothing like afternoon baseball… the warmth of the sun and the smell of the grass, a cool drink, popcorn and hotdogs. It can only be better if the game is at historic Rickwood Field in Birmingham. On May 30, we are taking a bus (or two) down for the Rickwood Classic game.

Built in 1910, Rickwood is the oldest professional baseball park in America. Players like Ty Cobb, Babe Baseball parkRuth, Christie Mathewson, Shoeless Joe Jackson, Satchel Page, Rollie Fingers & Bo Jackson all played there. It also was the home field for Willie Mays.

For years, it was the home of the Birmingham Barons of the Southern League and the Birmingham Black Barons of the Negro League. It is now home to the annual Rickwood Classic, which pits the current Barons against a Southern League opponent. This year’s classic is May 30 with gates opening at 11:00 AM and first pitch at 12:30 PM. Since all the tickets are general admission ($10 each) we plan to be there at 10:30 when the ticket booth opens. The bus(es) will leave the Grant Street parking lot at 8:30 AM and return after the final out.
